Annual Tree & Plant Sale

Smithfield Conservation Commission Annual Tree Day
Spring is here! Please join the Smithfield Conservation Commission as we celebrate spring with our annual tree sale. This year's sale will be May 8, 2010 at the Pavilion at Deerfield Park. The event starts at 10:00 A.M. and will run until 1:00 P.M. while supplies last. No early birds please.
Each year the commission allocates a portion of their budget for town beautification and this year we will offer Smithfield residents the following flowering plants: clethra, commonly known as a sweet pepper bush or summer sweet, is a shrub that typically grows 3 - 9 feet high and has white fragrant flowers blooming in five-inch-long clusters; and winterberry, which is a variety of shrub that grows up to eight feet in length and has bright red berries. The cost is $5.00 per pair and the sale is limited to Smithfield residents only. The Commission will also be offering ten free evergreen seedlings while supplies last.
The Smithfield Land Trust and other environmental organizations will have information tables set up at the sale as in years past.

The Town of Smithfield will join the Smithfield Conservation Commission’s plant sale on May 8th at Deerfield Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. to provide free composting information. Residents will have the opportunity to buy a Soilsaver compost bin at the discounted rate of $40 each.

The Town of Smithfield, in conjunction with Town Fair Tire and Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful (KBVB) will host a tire collection Saturday, May 15th from 9 am until 1 pm at the Smithfield Public Works Garage (3 Spragueville Road – behind Dave’s Towing Service). Only passenger vehicle tires without rims will be accepted.
All the tires collected on May 15th will be sent to Lakin Tire courtesy of Town Fair Tire. Lakin processes used tires for reuse and recycling. Recycled tires are turned into rubberized road surfaces; crumb rubber for playgrounds, horse riding arenas, and mulch; sound barriers; handicap accessible ramps; speed bumps; traffic cones; interior and exterior flooring; AND MORE!

On Saturday, May 15th, 2010, (National Peace Officers Memorial Day) the Smithfield Police Department will participate in a formal wreath laying ceremony to pay respect to deceased Smithfield Police Officers and honor active and retired officers who have served the Town of Smithfield.
The ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m., and will be followed by an Open House. The Open House will end at 2:00 p.m. The general public is invited to both events which will take place at police headquarters, 215 Pleasant View Avenue, Smithfield, RI.
The ceremony and Open House are also part of the Department's 60th Anniversary Celebration, as the year 2010 marks the 60th year since the Department was established as a permanent police force.
