  • Colonial Reenactors to Host Weekend Tours at Historic Smith-Appleby House Museum. Historical reenactors will host house tours and demonstrations of daily living in the 18th century on weekends through April at the Smith-Appleby House Museum in Smithfield.

    Volunteer historians in Colonial costume will conduct the tours where visitors can learn about the 316-year history and architecture of the home, the Smith-Appleby family and 18th century living in RI; watch demonstrations; examine period furnishings, clothing and household items; and sample hearth-baked goods.   • Child Outreach Free Screening: Children who are 3-5 years old and are residents of the Town of Smithfield can receive Vision, Hearing, Speech/Language, Development & Social/Emotional Skills screening. More information.
     

  • The Smithfield Heritage Hall of Fame is requesting nominations for the October 2012 Induction Ceremony.  The Committee is accepting names of individuals who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to the betterment of Smithfield, its citizens and quality of life be it in education, public service, recreation, business or community service.  Please call Karen Armstrong at 949-4590 for more information.  Deadline is March 31, 2012.

  • The URI SNAP Outreach Project, in partnership with the RI Department of Human Services and the US Department of Agriculture, works to increase participation in SNAP (formerly known as Food Stamps) through application assistance, trainings, distribution of educational materials, and positive SNAP messages in the media.   • Smithfield residents should be aware of the current high risk for tick-bites and tick-borne disease. Late May - early August is when the most cases of Lyme disease are transmitted to humans. Right now is peak season for Deer tick nymphs, about the size of a poppy-seed. Visit http://www.TickEncounter.org  This site contains helpful prevention strategies, seasonal tick activity, tick identification, and information about tick-bite borne disease.
     

  • Hardest Hit Fund - Rhode Island: The U.S. Treasury has made available to Rhode Islanders $80 million to help those at risk of losing their homes. Rhode Island Housing has been designated by the Treasury to oversee the Hardest Hit Fund Rhode Island (HHFRI). The agency will be processing, approving and administering the submissions from your lender/servicer and specially trained HHFRI certified counselors.   • OFFICE OF THE HEALTH INSURANCE COMMISSIONER:  The Office of the Health Insurance Commissioner for the State of Rhode Island was created to protect health insurance consumers, make sure health insurers have enough money on hand to pay claims, ensure fair treatment of medical service providers and encourage insurers to improve the overall affordability and quality of the healthcare system.  They can be found online at www.ohic.ri.gov
     

  • BEACON HOSPICE SEEKS LOCAL VOLUNTEERS:   Beacon Hospice provides quality end-of-life care to local terminally-ill patients out of it’s  office’s and relies on volunteers to ensure the delivery of extraordinary care to these patients. We have patients in local nursing homes such as, Cortland Place, Heritage Hills, and Haven Health Center of Greenville. Volunteers can provide much needed support to patients and their families in a number of ways including:
     

    • visiting with patients on an ongoing basis,
    • sitting vigils,
    • knitting, crocheting, quilting and,
    • organizing craft projects

  • SMITHFIELD SEEKS VOLUNTEERS:  The Town of Smithfield is seeking citizens to serve on various boards & commissions. Please see the Boards & Commissions page for further information.
     

  • FOSTER CARE:  Dare Family Services, a leading, therapeutic foster care agency in Massachusetts for over 40 years is now expanding to Rhode Island. We are actively seeking caring families to provide foster care for area children ranging in age from newborn to 18. While helping a child, you will receive excellent training, 24 hour support and a tax free stipend toward the child's care. You can make a difference in a child's life.   • CAMPER OR TRAILER SEWERAGE: Town residents who need to dispose of waste from a holding tank may contact Karen Goffe at the Wastewater Treatment Plant at 231-1506 ext 202. Please call Monday through Friday between 8:30 am to 2 pm, 24 hours to 48 hrs in advance, to arrange for an appointment.

  • SMITHFIELD FOOD BANK:  The Smithfield Welfare Office and Food Bank is located in the Smithfield Senior Center and has an established food pantry for  the benefit of welfare or low-income families of Smithfield.  Open Monday thru Friday, 8:00 am - 12:00 pm.  Call Janet at 949-4590.  Click here for more information.

  • FOOD PANTRY:  Saint Vincent de Paul Food Pantry at St. Philip Church, 620 Putnam Pike, Smithfield, Phone: 949-2949.  Hours:  Every Wednesday from 1:00pm - 3:00pm, 1st & 3rd Sunday monthly from 9:00am to 10:30am. 
     

  • HAVE A STREET LIGHT OUT?  Report a problem with a street light directly to the electric company, the National Grid, with the web-based form here. You can report problems such as light out, light on during the day, dim light, etc.  Having the pole number is helpful.  You will receive an e-mail response to your request.
     

  • ARE YOU OKAY? - Smithfield Police Department Telephone Reassurance Program: This is a free service program for seniors and homebound residents featuring daily calls to subscribers' homes at the same time each day, up to 7 days a week.  For further information on this program contact Smithfield PD Community Police Office at 231-2500.

  • CHILD CAR SEAT INSPECTIONS:  The Smithfield Police Department offers free child car seat installation inspections, by appointment only.  To schedule an appointment please call 231-2500.
