What's New

2010 Yard Waste Collection

The Town of Smithfield will begin Lawn and Yard Waste April 5th. Yard waste is collected on residents’ regular trash day on a route separate from trash and recycling.

Yard waste must be set at the curb in brown paper bags (available at local retailers) or barrels clearly labeled “YARD WASTE”. Yard waste in plastic garbage bags or cardboard boxes will not be collected. A maximum of 8 barrels and/or bags of household trash and yard waste combined is accepted per household.

Yard waste will be collected every week April 5th through May 28th; every other week June 1st through October 29th, and every week November 1st through December 3rd. For a printer friendly calendar please click the link below or you may pick-up a copy at the Town Hall, the Senior Center or any Smithfield library.

Composting is a good way to reduce your curbside yard waste collection requirements. Compost bins are available to residents for $40 each at the Smithfield Public Works Garage located at 3 Spragueville Road (behind Dave’s Towing Service).

Please contact Smithfield Recycling Coordinator, at 233-1034 ext 105 or at lgagnon@smithfieldri.com with questions.

How do I dispose of leftover paint?
Empty metal, #1or #2 plastic cans can be placed in your blue bin.  The lid can be included in the bin but must be off the can.  The best option is to use up all of the paint. If you have a substantial amount left over from your project, try contacting elementary schools, theater groups, Habitat for Humanity, the Ronald McDonald House, or other community groups to see if they can use your paint for their projects.

Latex paint: Line a cardboard box with a trash bag.  Pour the leftover paint into the bag and allow the paint to solidify, and then dispose the paint in your regular trash.  Recycle the can in your blue bin. There are commercially available agents (as well as cat litter, sand or sawdust) that speed the solidifying process along.

Oil paint: Oil paint is a household hazardous waste, and must be taken to the Eco-Depot, either the main location at the Central Landfill in Johnston or at one of the satellite locations held around the state. Smithfield is hosting a household hazardous waste drop-off on Saturday, August 19, 2006. Call the DPW for more information.
