SHRED-IT!

When:
Saturday, April 26th, 9am - 1pm

Where:
Smithfield DPW Garage
3 Spragueville Road map
(Behind Dave’s Towing Service)

Bring up to three bankers boxes of documents to be shredded for free!

Now that taxes have been filed you may be looking at your old 1040s and wondering how long you need to hold on to them. While you should save your tax returns indefinitely, you can discard the supporting documentation after six years. So, all those W-2s, bank statements, etc. from years prior to 2002 can be discarded. To ensure confidentiality and prevent identity theft, Smithfield invites residents to a Shred-It event on Saturday, April 26th at the Public Works Garage, 3 Spragueville Road (Behind Dave’s Towing Service) from 9am until 1pm. Please limit the amount of documents you bring to no more than 3 bankers boxes. Recycling for cardboard boxes you bring your documents in will be provided.

The first 10 residents to participate will receive a gift certificate to Dunkin’ Donuts, courtesy of Dan’s Management, a Dunkin’ Donuts franchisee.

You are not limited to only shredding supporting documents for taxes. You may bring any paper items (no CDs or credit cards are accepted).

There are other documents you may not know you can discard after a period of time. You can discard the documents according to the list below:

  • Bank statements—six years

  • Brokers’ confirmation slips for purchases—until security is sold

  • Canceled checks—six years

  • Contracts—seven years after expiration

  • Credit card statements—six years

  • Receipts for home improvements that can be added to tax basis of home—
six years after home is sold in a transaction that is not a “rollover” transaction

  • Insurance papers (all types of insurance)—four years after expiration

  • Mortgage records—three years after paid off

  • Owners’ manuals for appliances—until item is discarded

  • Receipts for major warranted purchases—until item is discarded or sold

  • Records supporting income tax returns and deductions (W-2s, 1099s, receipts)—six years

  • Warranties and extended service agreements—until expiration

  • Owners’ manuals and warranties for appliances and cars you no longer own—immediately

  • Receipts for credit card purchases if not major or related to a tax deduction—immediately

Please call Recycling Coordinator, Gina Barbeau at 233-1034 with questions.
