LOCATION:
The Tax Collector's office is located in Town Hall, 64 Farnum Pike, on
the 1st floor.
FUNCTION:
The Tax Collector’s office collects all taxes, real estate, motor
vehicle, tangible and sewer taxes. We also collect the revenue for the
Smithfield Water Supply. If you are selling your home and need an
update on taxes, a municipal lien certificate (MLC), would be needed for
all closings.

What
hours are you open?
We are open from 8:30 a.m. to
4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is also
a drive-up deposit box
located at the front entrance of Town Hall for payments to the Tax
Collector’s Office. Payments are accepted for real estate, motor
vehicle, sewer, and Smithfield Water Supply bills. No cash please.
Can I
pay my taxes with a charge card?
No. We will accept personal checks, bank checks, money orders and
cash.
Can I
post date my check?
No. You must have sufficient
funds in your checking account it you give us a personal check.
Can I
pay taxes for someone else using my checking account?
Yes. We will apply your
check to anyone's taxes you would like to pay.
What
if I want to pay taxes on the motor vehicle I have now, I do not have
these other vehicles any more?
No. You must pay the prior
year bills first. Any vehicles in your name must be paid up to date if
you need to register a vehicle or transfer plates.
Can I
pay the first quarter on my Real Estate Taxes and make partial payments
on the prior year?
No. All prior year taxes,
whether Real Estate, Motor Vehicle or Tangible must be paid in full
before payments will be applied to the current year.
I'm
at the Registry of Motor Vehicles and they tell me I have delinquent
taxes, can you clear my registration?
No. You must pay your taxes,
to be current, and then we will clear you at the registry.
How
can I avoid any interest charges?
If the first installment, or any succeeding installment, of taxes is not
paid by the last day of the respective installment period, interest will
continue to accrue until that quarter has been paid in full at the rate
of 12 percent per annum.
Do you give a grace period
and accept the post mark date?
Yes, we give a ten day grace
period. No. We do not accept post mark dates.
