The Town of Smithfield in
conjunction with Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful, a
program of the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council, will
hold tire recycling collection event for the Blackstone
Valley community. The “Blackstone Valley Tire Round-Up”
will be held on Saturday, May 17, from 9am to 1pm at the
Smithfield Public Works Garage, 3 Spragueville Road.
Residents from the Blackstone Valley’s cities and towns
are encouraged to bring tires that they may have on
their property. Disposal of rimless tires is free (tires with rims are
not accepted). This
collection is for residents only and is not open to
businesses. Passenger tires from cars and light trucks
will be accepted for recycling. No commercial truck
tires will be accepted.
The first 10 residents to
recycle tires will receive gift certificates to Dunkin’
Donuts, courtesy of Dan’s Management, a Dunkin’ Donuts
franchisee.
“This
tire recycling drive will help prevent tires from ending
up in our river and our environment,” said Kristin
Zawistowski, Keep Blackstone Valley Beautiful program
coordinator and AmeriCorps*VISTA member. “Here’s your
chance to recycle tires you may have in your garage that
you were unsure of how to dispose of.”
This
event is part of Keep America Beautiful’s Great American
Cleanup™, the nation’s largest community improvement
program that is held nationally from March 1 to May 31.
Firestone Complete Auto Care, a National Sponsor for the
Great American Cleanup™, agrees to recycle tires
nationwide, free of charge. Local sponsors of the event
are Firestone Complete Auto Care in Pawtucket, Bill’s
Auto Parts, the Town of Smithfield and Dan’s Management,
a Dunkin’ Donuts/Baskin-Robbins franchisee.
Keep
Blackstone Valley Beautiful’s Tire Round-Up tire
recycling drives have prevented over 20,000 tires from
ending up in our environment. The 2007 Great American
Cleanup diverted more than 2.2 million scrap tires from
the waste stream nation wide.
Every year, millions of tires are improperly disposed in
our communities. According to the EPA, there are at
least 275 million scrap tires in stockpiles in the U.S.
