from residents who do not recycle. There
will be no exceptions to this program. |
Replacement recycling bins
are available at the Highway Garage at 3 Spragueville
Rd. (next to the Ice Rink/Animal Shelter, off Rte.
116/Pleasant View Ave.) The bins cost $5 each, and may
be purchased between 8:00a.m.-3:30, Mon-Fri.

QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS
My bins
are ancient and falling apart. I need new ones.
-
If
your bins are being held together with duct tape,
bungee cords, a wish, and a prayer, you can replace
your old bins with brand new ones for $5 each. They
are available at the Highway Garage on Spragueville
Rd. (off Rte. 116/Pleasant View Ave., near the Ice
Rink and next to the Animal Shelter). Bin purchase
hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. If you are
unable to get to the DPW during those hours, please
call the Recycling Coordinator to make alternate
arrangements. 233-1034.
-
There is no limit to how much you can set out for
recycling! If you think you can fill two or three blue or green
bins each week, please come in and purchase
additional bins.
I
recently moved to town and never received bins.
-
If
you’ve recently (within the past 6 months) moved to
Smithfield, and were not left recycling bins or
never received them, you are entitled to receive one
(1) FREE set of recycling bins. Please bring
verification of your recent move (a copy of your
certificate of occupancy, a copy of your Postal
Service change of address, or anything that can
verify your date of residency in town) to the
Highway Garage when you pick up your bins.
I
simply don’t have enough recyclables to fill a bin each
week.
-
Not
a problem. The bins don’t have to be full to be
collected. If you only have one bottle in your blue
bin, we’ll take it. Everyone needs to start
somewhere! Keep in mind, too, that bringing your
bins to the curb each week, instead of waiting to
fill them, means a lighter load for you to carry or
drag to the curb.
-
If
you only have items for one bin, that’s OK too.
Every residence must set out at least one bin of
recycling each week to receive trash collection.
I have
no idea what to recycle and I don’t want to make a
mistake.
-
Not
to worry-it’s easier than you think. On the back of
the enclosed calendar you’ll find a list of
recyclables for both bins.
-
Our
Recycling Coordinator will gladly come to your home
to help you identify the recyclables in your
trash-just call the recycling office at 233-1034 to schedule a
Household Recycling Audit.
-
Rule of thumb #1: If it rips easily, put it in the
green bin.
-
Rule of thumb #2: When in doubt, check it out. We
have recycling and disposal information for you in a
variety of places:
-
Town
of Smithfield Recycling List
-
Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation Guide To
Recycling
-
Town of Smithfield Recycling Page
-
Hard copy brochures are available at the
Highway Garage.
The
recycling truck comes before the trash truck, and I take
my bins in right away. How will the trash guys know that
I’ve recycled?
-
This is a good question, and for now, we ask for
your patience as we fine tune the program. Until
further notice, please leave your recycling bins out
until after the trash is picked up, and put all the
containers away at the same time. If there
becomes a different method to let the garbage
collectors know that recycling has already been
picked up from every house on the route, we will
implement that change.
