The Department consists of six major divisions: Town Council Records, Land Records Registry, Board of Canvassers, Registry of Vital Statistics, Probate Court, and Business Licenses. In addition to receiving, recording and issuing these documents, the Office is responsible for the maintenance, indexing and storage of all of these records for easy access by the public and other departments. The Town Clerk’s Department is the official repository for all ordinances, resolutions and official documents related to the government of the Town of Smithfield. The department is responsible for the authenticity of all legal documents. |
Voter & Election Information Page
If you are opening a business in Smithfield, you must first register your business with the Town Clerk. This requirement helps the Town maintain up-to-date records on businesses operating locally in accordance with state law, and also assists us in providing a level playing field for business proprietors with regards to licensing and taxation. With Fraud Alert, you can sign up to receive alerts whenever a document, such as a deed or mortgage, is recorded under your name. Documents can be viewed online or at the Town Clerk’s Office. What do I need to apply for a marriage license and what is the cost?
Certified records of birth. If this is not a first marriage for either the bride or groom, a certified copy of death or divorce decree is required. The fee for a marriage license is $24.00. Marriage Requirements in the State of Rhode Island

How do I register to vote?
Voter registration forms can be filled out online, at the Registry of Motor Vehicles or here at the Board of Canvassers located in the Town Clerk’s Office. You may request a voter registration form by calling 233-1000 between 8:30 A.M. and 4:30 P.M. Also see the Voter Information page

From 295 take exit 7A (Centerdale). Take a left at traffic light and follow to the end. Take a left onto Farnum Pike for approximately ½ mile.
